Timely energy awareness workshops being rolled out across Clare
Clare Local Development Company’s Just Transition team is running a series of practical energy-awareness workshops across County Clare this June, sharing easy steps households and community services can take to save energy, cut bills and improve comfort. Hannah Griffey CLDC’s Just Transition officer is running a series of energy awareness workshops.
What’s happening and where:
- 16 & 17 June — Energy Awareness Workshops (clients only) at Killaloe K‑Club daycare centre.
- 23 June — Energy Awareness Workshop (clients only) at Kilrush Daycare Centre.
Practical tips the workshops will cover

- Behaviour changes: Small habits at home can make a big difference to energy costs. Simple actions such as using high-energy appliances during off-peak times, replacing older appliances with more energy-efficient models, and lowering room or water temperatures can all help reduce bills. Using timers and running appliances during cheaper tariff periods can also cut costs.
And remember – if you boil the kettle, make the tea!
- Understand your bill and meter: Understanding your electricity or heating bill can help households choose the most suitable plan for their needs. Submitting regular meter readings also helps ensure bills are accurate, so you are charged only for what you actually use rather than estimated usage.
- Home basics: Simple measures such as draught-proofing and maintaining correct room temperatures can reduce heating costs while also lowering the risk of damp and mould. Guidance on ideal room temperatures can help households stay comfortable while using energy efficiently.
- Moisture management: Managing moisture levels in the home improves both comfort and health. Keeping indoor humidity between 40–50% and using dehumidifiers where necessary can make homes easier and cheaper to heat, while also helping prevent condensation and mould growth.
- Small investments and tools: Low-cost items available locally, such as draught excluders and window seals, can help keep heat inside the home. The Home Energy Saving Kit can also help identify problem areas through the use of low-cost sensors, thermal leak detectors, and energy monitoring plugs, available to rent or purchase. Low‑cost sensors, thermal leak detectors and monitoring plugs (available through Home Energy Saving Kit) help identify waste and target fixes.
- Grants and supports: This workshop explains the range of grants and supports available for improving home energy efficiency, whether your home is council-owned, privately rented, or owner-occupied. Participants will learn about SEAI grants, low-interest retrofit loans, insulation supports, and other schemes that may help reduce energy costs and improve comfort in the home. CLDC can also provide guidance and signposting to the most suitable supports for each household.
