Minister Dara Calleary Sees First-Hand the Energy Improvements Taking Shape in Corofin
Corofin Community Centre recently welcomed Minister Dara Calleary TD as part of his visit to Clare, where he marked the completion of a number of local development projects.
One of the key projects highlighted was the work being supported by Clare Local Development Company through the SEAI Sustainable Energy Communities programme. At the centre of this work is Denise O’Brien, CLDC’s Sustainable Energy Communities Mentor, who helps local groups turn good ideas into real energy-saving projects.

In Corofin, that support has already made a big difference.
By working with SEAI and using Energy Master Plan funding, the Sustainable Corofin community group was able to map out a plan for reducing energy use and cutting emissions locally. That plan has now led to real improvements on the ground.
What has been done so far?
Corofin Community Hall
The hall secured €67,000 in funding to make a series of upgrades, including solar panels, battery storage, better insulation and LED lighting. The solar energy being produced on site is now helping to power the hall and lighting for the nearby playing field.
Working together brought more results
The momentum from that project also helped bring together Corofin Community Hall, Corofin Tidy Towns, Corofin GAA and the North Clare Agricultural Show for a joint climate action application. That effort secured about €17,000 for more local climate-related projects.
Recognition from SEAI
Corofin’s work will also be featured in a national SEAI case study, showing how local groups, with the right support, can make practical and lasting energy improvements.
Why this matters locally
This is a good example of what can happen when a community comes together with a clear plan and the right support behind it. The benefits are not just about cutting carbon — they also help reduce bills, improve local facilities and build a stronger, more resilient community.
CLDC is continuing to support communities across Clare through the SEAI Sustainable Energy Communities programme, helping more groups take the first steps toward their own energy projects.
